Authentica announced on Tuesday Version 2.0 of its Secure Office enterprise DRM solution for Microsoft Office file formats.  This product, which is currently in beta with several of Authenticas customers, contains a number of significant advances over the 1.0 release of less than a year ago.

Some of the features that are new to Secure Office appear to be migrated from Authenticas legacy product, PageRecall, an enterprise DRM solution that works solely with PDF files (and which the company still supports).  New features include the ability to dynamically insert visible watermarks in Office documents when they are printed; integration with Authenticas existing workflow tools for secure file sharing and email; and better administrative tools for enterprise policy definition and management.

With this new product announcement, Authentica solidifies its position as one of the standalone vendors attempting to make a serious play in the high end of the enterprise DRM space, independently of Microsoft.  (Authentica also announced, back in May, a strategy to integrate its technology with Microsofts platform, Rights Management Services (RMS), but has not released such a product to date.)  Adding to the companys momentum are recent additions to its management team, including a Marketing VP, Mark Overington, who is a refugee from the media/entertainment side of DRM.

Secure Office uses a plug-in architecture on the client side which resembles that of perhaps Authenticas biggest rival, and the only company in the space that has been around longer: SealedMedia.  The recent additions to Secure Office address deficiencies in Authenticas offerings with respect to SealedMedia on enterprise policy definition functionality.  SealedMedia supports a wider variety of content formats, while Authenticas product line -- now more fully integrated than before -- has more functionality for secure messaging and file transfer.

The competition in the enterprise DRM space is heating up, while companies below this top tier come and go, and while Microsoft continues to advance its RMS platform.  There is general agreement that solutions like those from Authentica, SealedMedia, and Liquid Machines provide more enterprise-level functionality than RMS; questions remain about whether these independent vendors will continue to go it alone, partner with Microsoft, and/or be acquired -- presumably by a large vendor in the content management space like EMC (Documentum) or IBM.  Liquid Machines and Authentica have announced RMS integration strategies. Liquid Machines has just announced integration of the secure messaging engine that came with its Omniva acquisition, while SealedMedia remains fiercely independent.
